In our most recent episode of The Smut Diaries Podcast we looked at the difference between Erotica and Romance as well as the different levels of Smut.
Obviously the opening of our podcast we couldn't resist looking at the textbook definition of the word 'smut' itself and how this transitioned to being used as a word for sexually explicit books.
There are essentially 5 levels of smut and its a choice of what level you are comfortable with reading to the books and authors that you pick. This also can be a reflection of your adventures into adulthood and the gradual progression of sexual freedom that you go through as you get older.
Level 1: Kissing, longing stares, hand holding
This is often found in YA books or clean romances...
Level 2: Making out, groping, fade to black sex
This is like the first step into more serious adult stories but still not giving you any details...
Level 3: Open door sex, very vanilla, sweet
A lot of the sweet clean adult romance authors will fit into this category, the type that was what filled most bookstores before smut became commonplace...
Level 4: Explicit sex, dirty talk, a little darker & rougher
This is the level most of us are at and what we all love to read, the detailed sex scenes that have you feeling all sorts of ways...
Level 5: Straight up smut
Basically where the story is 85% sex or smut with just enough plot to keep it out of the literary porn category...
When looking at the difference between Romance and Erotica we can easily look at two main factors, love and sex. I mean, we all know that sex sells as the old saying goes, but how much sex is required to be included for it to sell.
Well that depends on us as a reader in what we ideally are feeling like at the time. Do we want love and a happy ever after to be the main content and to enjoy all the little twists and turns of the characters getting to know each other slowly and falling for one another... or do we want to rush headlong into the sexual tension and encounters where the actual storyline and the slow dive is secondary to the sex.
